Frequently asked questions
Who are Media First?
We have been delivering bespoke media, presentations and communication training for around 40 years.
We provide bespoke courses to suit the individual needs of each client.
Our primary aim is to help delegates develop their skills, knowledge and confidence to handle the media and other audiences and land key messages.
What can I expect from my training day with you?
It will be testing and fun.
We believe people apply their knowledge best when they take an active role in their learning, receive immediate constructive feedback and have fun.
That’s why we make our courses as practical as possible and ensure delegates get the chance to develop their skills in realistic scenarios.
Can I park at your training studios?
There is parking available at our Winnersh studios. Please refer to the location details in your joining information.
As you turn into the car park, please park on the right-hand side in the spaces clearly marked Media First.
If the car park barrier is down, please use the intercom to speak to security, or refer to your joining instructions for the car park code.
There is no parking available at our London studios.
Is there a dress code?
Not really, but smart/casual is best. Some of our courses involve being recorded on camera, so try to avoid checks/busy patterns and bright or dark colours.
Above all, wear something that makes you feel comfortable.
Do I need to bring food and drink?
We’ll provide you with hot and cold drinks. And plenty of biscuits to keep the energy levels up. A complimentary buffet lunch will be provided on our full-day courses.
What about my allergies/special dietary requirements?
Let us know if you have any food allergies or special dietary requirements (i.e. no meat or halal) and we will cater for your needs.
What do I need to bring with me?
You can travel light.
You will need to bring a copy of your completed pre-course questionnaire.
If you are taking part in a presentation course, you may be required to bring a presentation on a memory stick.
We provide all our training participants with notebooks and pens.
I’m doing a presentation course – do I need to prepare anything in advance?
Don’t worry, we are not expecting you to turn up with a formal presentation or a PowerPoint you have spent hours preparing.
If you have little experience in public speaking, your presentation may be about a favourite holiday destination or your career so far. More confident speakers might choose to present on a business topic..
If you booked the training to prepare for a specific presentation please bring that with you. You can send the presentation to us but, if possible, please also bring it on a USB stick.
Please note that the presentation shouldn’t be too long. Between 5-10 minutes will be fine.
What if English is not my first language?
We understand speaking to journalists and delivering presentations can make people feel anxious, especially for those who don’t have English as a first language.
Don’t worry.
Our expert tutors have delivered training across the world and will help you overcome your fears and concerns and show you how to deliver successful presentations and interviews with confidence.
My company is not ready to talk to the media about this new product/service - can we still practice discussing it on the course?
Don’t worry, confidentiality is at the heart of everything we do.
Everything you say to our tutors or any member of our team stays in the training room.
I am expecting an important phone call on the day – what should I do?
Media First has worked with more than 40 per cent of the FTSE 100 and trained thousands of senior directors.
We know some calls cannot wait.
Our training takes place in a relaxed environment. So, if you need to take an important call, leave the training room and return when you can.
Are all your venues suitable for people with limited mobility?
Our training often takes place in current working TV and radio studios.
If you have any mobility concerns please let us know in advance and we will work with you to ensure your session is as comfortable as possible.
Are observers allowed on the course?
It’s often useful for one lead, or contributing observer to be present from the communication or media team to help with messaging.
But multiple observers can cause a distraction for the participants. This is something that can be discussed with your account manager before the course takes place.
What post-course support do you provide?
Our courses are more than just a training day. We remain by your side as you continue your journey to better communication.
A few days after the course, you will receive detailed feedback from our tutors.
And you will be given access to our new AI-training companion for 30 days to allow you to keep your new skills sharp.
You can also join our mailing list and join the thousands of people who receive our regular blogs packed with expert tips and advice.
We are trusted by companies large and small.
