Gail Downey
Gail has more than 20 years experience as a journalist and broadcaster and has worked for both ITV and the BBC national news. Among leading figures she has interviewed are Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher and John Major. As a radio presenter for BBC Five Live she anchored peak-time programmes with Peter Allen and Brian Hayes. In 1997 she was first to report the crash in Paris in which Princess Diana was killed. Gail's career began in regional newspapers. She later worked at several local radio stations and as a documentary film maker for Anglia Television before moving to the BBC's network centre in London. From there she went on to be a senior television reporter and newsreader for ITV's Central News. Besides presenting live programmes her work has involved scripting and editing material for news bulletins, conducting interviews by telephone and satellite and directing film crews on location. Gail has recently produced documentaries for The History Channel and People's War for BBC1.
